Most people think of 2-cycle engines as the small engines found in chain saws, leaf blowers, and string trimmers or larger versions found in snowmobiles and outboards. These engines require either premixing oil with the fuel or have an injection system that takes oil from a tank to mix with the fuel. Many don’t realize that there are 2-cycle engines that are just as large as 4-cycle engines, maybe larger. Detroit Diesel and other manufacturers have been manufacturing 2-cycle engines for decades that have oil sumps and valves and operate basically the same as a 4-cycle engine. The main difference is that the 2-cycle engine gives you a power stroke every revolution whereas a 4-cycle engine produces a power stroke ever other revolution.

Double Length Sequence IIIG Engine Test
An evaluation of AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil in standard and Double Length Sequence IIIG Engine Tests. The Sequence IIIG Engine Test (ASTM D7320) is an industry-standard test designed to evaluate automotive engine oils for high-temperature performance, including oil thickening, piston deposits, oil consumption and engine wear during moderately high-speed, high-temperature service. It must be passed to meet the API SN and ILSAC GF-5 motor oil specifications. Results in the 100-hour test are an important indicator of how well a motor oil will perform in real-world service.

Motor Oil And Cold Temperatures
The term “Cold” can be relative. It all depends on what you are used to. In the summer, 50 degrees can feel cold yet, in the middle of winter, it can feel downright balmy. For this post however, we’re talking about motor oil and for motor oil, cold temperatures below 40 degrees will have a negative effect on the oils flow characteristics.
