In a 1996 ad promoting their water resistant grease AMSOIL said:
In 1996 AMSOIL Synthetic Water Resistant Grease was an excellent choice for grease applications with exposure to wet environments. The NLGI specification allowed up to 15% water washout (ASTM D1264). AMSOILs Synthetic Water Resistant Grease (GWR) was 0.9%.
In theory, they could have run this test 15 times without regreasing the bearing and the AMSOIL Synthetic Water Resistant Grease would have still passed.
Since I had never really compared different greases, I started trying to find the characteristics for different brands of water resistant grease. What little information I could find (pre Google) indicated most “marine” greases had a water washout between 6% and 8% with some as high as 12%. Not great, no matter what their advertising said. (If I remember correctly, the AMSOIL Synthetic Multi-Purpose Grease was around 2.5%, better than most “marine” greases at that time.)
Today, the NLGI standard is still 15% max. The industry has developed better additives. AMSOIL has reformulated products to take advantage of these improvements. The AMSOIL Synthetic Water Resistant Grease now meets or exceeds the standards set by the AMSOIL Synthetic Heavy Duty Grease of 25 years ago.
They have however lost a little in the water washout test. They are now at 1.25% and still better than most “marine” greases. And if you are looking for a good multi-purpose grease, the AMSOIL Synthetic Multi-Purpose Grease is now 1.7% on the water washout test.
