New Motor Oil Specifications In Effect

The automotive industry’s latest specifications, ILSAC GF-6 and API SP, are now effective. AMSOIL is ahead of the game.

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are under pressure to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. As a result, most new engines today use some combination of turbochargers, direct-fuel injection and variable valve timing to deliver better fuel economy and increase horsepower.

The trend of lighter engine oils to achieve these goals continues with 0W-16 viscosities emerging in the market and 0W-12 and 0W-8 expected to follow. The industry has responded to these advanced engine technologies and ultra-light oil viscosities with two new oil specifications: ILSAC GF-6 and API SP.

The Split: GF-6A and B

The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) has set a new precedent in the passenger-car motor oil market by splitting its specification into two parts. One of the main differences between the two specifications is compatibility. See the chart below.

Both versions focus on wear protection, prevention of low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) and improved engine cleanliness. However, GF-6B features a more stringent fuel economy test. Engine oils can easily be identified as ILSAC GF-6A or 6B by the API emblem on the front label of the packaging. A shield represents the GF-6B specification, while the traditional starburst indicates a GF-6A product. Both ILSAC specifications meet the industry-standard API SP specification which is most commonly found in owners’ manuals.

We Are Ready

Our claims about using advanced technology aren’t just talk, and this specification update proves it once again. AMSOIL synthetic motor oils already meet or exceed the new industry standards and require no change in formulation. This is not the first time we’ve been in this position. While the competition works on making major formulation adjustments, we are ready. Our product labels will soon feature the new specifications as inventories of current packaging are depleted.

AMSOIL’s New Runs On Freedom Snowmobile Warranty

Long – Standing Warranty Battle

Dan Peterson | AMSOIL Senior Vice President of Dealer Sales and Marketing.

Use AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR® Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil exclusively in your new-model-year sled and we’ll cover engine repairs in the unlikely event of any engine breakdown for up to two years/5,000 miles/8,000 km.

“Many riders are afraid of losing their factory warranty should they deviate from the OEM-recommended oil and some snowmobile OEMs take advantage by trying to pressure customers into buying the OEM brand of lubricants. We’ve seen forms that riders are asked to sign saying they agree to use the OEM oil or risk losing their factory warranty.”

The Dealer Network Strikes Back

We and our Dealers have always pointed out that tying use of an OEM lubricant to the factory warranty is illegal. The federal Magnuson Moss Warranty Act protects enthusiasts’ freedom to choose the brand of parts and lubricants they think is best. It is illegal to tie warranty coverage to whichever brand of parts or lubricants they use. What’s more, manufacturers can’t deny warranty coverage without showing the aftermarket part or lubricant caused a failure.

“A few years ago, we doubled down on this message with our Runs on Freedom campaign,” said Peterson.

“We developed a video that explains the truth and created the popular Runs on Freedom logo.” The message has been the center of our snowmobile advertising for the past couple seasons.

Effective April 1, 2020, the new AMSOIL Runs on Freedom Snowmobile Warranty covers engine repairs for two years or 5,000 miles (8,000 km), whichever comes first, on new-model-year two-stroke sleds that use AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR® Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil (AIT) exclusively.

“This is a new-to-market warranty no other aftermarket snowmobile lubricant manufacturer offers,” said Peterson. “We’re so confident in our products that we’ll cover any repair to an oil-lubricated engine part in the unlikely event of an engine failure.” This new warranty offers peace of mind and eliminates the final hurdle stopping many customers from using AMSOIL snowmobile oil.

You may be wondering how this warranty differs from our standard Limited Liability Warranty. “The Runs on Freedom Snowmobile Warranty is meant to be as simple as possible,” said Peterson. “Our Limited Liability Warranty is excellent, but riders have to submit oil samples and parts to ensure the oil caused a problem. While that’s standard industry practice, most people view it as a hassle. In contrast, this is a no-fault warranty. You don’t have to send oil samples or parts. And you don’t have to attempt to prove the oil failed. As long as you’re a registered participant and meet the requirements, we’ll cover any repair to an oil-lubricated engine part. Period.”

Oil Doesn’t Break Down, It Just Gets Dirty

I’ve heard this for years. I got my license in 1964 and I probably heard that statement back then and I still hear it now. Is it true?

The answer is yes . . . and no. No matter how clean you keep your oil, you will eventually need to change it. The following will explain why.

SLS Notes: AMSOIL makes excellent oils and they have high efficiency By-Pass Filtration systems. But even using both, replacing the filters to keep them clean and working efficiently and topping off the oil with fresh oil to make up what was lost in the filter change, you will still need to change your oil, eventually. It is just a matter of when. At some point, the additives, even with the boost provided by the make up oil, will become depleted and the oil will need to be changed.

I used to have a customer with an old MG, 1952 I think. He used the AMSOIL in his “regular driver” but insisted he didn’t need to change the oil in the MG. He had installed a “Frantz” filter (toilet paper) when the car was new and had never changed the oil. (This was probably in the mid 90’s)

The car wasn’t driven much, maybe 2,000 to 3,000 miles a year, if that. Every year he changed the toilet paper roll and added about a quart of makeup oil. (regular petroleum oil, not synthetic.)

The day he showed me the car, the oil had a light brown color and no unusual odor. I only wish I had grabbed a sample to have the oil tested. That’s the only way to know if the oil was continuing to do its job or really needed to be changed.

Would I recommend doing this? No, but AMSOIL makes excellent By-Pass filtration systems that will work as well or better than the Frantz filter. On top of that, the filters are spin-on so changing the filter should be a lot less messy. And the By-Pass systems are designed with a place to put a valve for taking a sample, a must if you are going to run extended drain intervals.

Get Ready For ILSAC GF6 (API SP) Motor Oils

On May 1, 2020 ILSAC GF6 / API SP motor oils should be available. This new standard is a significant step up from GF5 which is why it has taken much longer than initially anticipated. Eight new tests were added that an oil must pass to qualify for GF6 certification. To read more about the process and tests, check out this motor.com site. (It’s nice to know that AMSOIL already meets or exceeds the requirements as currently released.)

Winter Storage Of AMSOIL Products

While a temperature and humidity controlled storage area would be great for storing your lubricants and other products, if you’re like most people, you store your AMSOIL Products on a shelf in your unheated garage or storage shed. Depending on where in the country you live, that could mean a minimum temperature anywhere from 40ºF to -40ºF or lower.
